Oh God. I know you guys mostly skim anything I post starting with "Gl" or "Ma," but TRUST ME YOU WANT TO READ THIS. I have been sitting here for several minutes just sort of staring at it. Occasionally, people say really creepy things about Markéta Irglová, but never before have I come across such a masterpiece as this.

Glen Hansard mentioned in an interview some time after their performance in Seattle, that he and Marketa had some unexpected visitors backstage to meet them: Bill & Melinda Gates and family. One wonders what the Gates’ beheld in Hansard & Irglova that would have prompted them to use a perquisite of power to get a closer look. In another interview, Hansard revealed that he and Marketa had been invited by Al Gore to join him for dinner. Again, one wonders what motivated Al to reach out to invite these aspiring young musicians for dinner. Surely, such occurrences are not common. I suspect, with all due respect to Hansard’s talents, that Bill Gates and Al Gore were as secretly smitten as the thousands of other men and women who beheld Ms. Irglova’s acting and ethereal singing debut in ONCE. Why? Because in an age of endless parading of prurient films pandering to the masses’ baser drives, one cannot help be taken by the stark contrast of decency and virtue this valiant young woman portrays. She’s intelligent, personal, helpful, courteous, generous, constructive, industrious — and modestly dressed neck to toe throughout the entire film. Not only is there no sex, there’s zero exposure. Moreover, when asked in the film by Guy to “stay the night,” Girl demurs politely despite a fleeting tug of temptation, and then becomes justifiably indignant at Guy’s crass persistence. Here art seems to portend real life. For there is a YouTube interview showing a shy Marketa, occasionally flashing her Princess Diana smile, suddenly blanching and lurching forward at Glen Hansard’s mere insinuation that he might have kissed her privately. Gracious! In a time of crass celebrity pudenda photos and shameless announcements of who is illicitly pregnant by whom, could we find such a real virtuous young woman as this?! Perhaps there ought to be a market research poll taken of those who beheld Ms. Irglova’s moving performance in ONCE. I suspect the magnitude of those slain by the sights and sounds of this lovely ingénue were far greater than realized. The audiences were not simply watching and hearing the moving performance of just another young woman, they were witnessing the birth of a dragon slaying star.

I think I need someone to come here and hold my hand. Or can we at least sit down and talk about htis?

Seriously. It's like some magical compound of beauty, sexy, enthusiasm, talent, intelligence, compassion, humility, honesty, and grace all morphed into the magnificent creature that is Céline Dion.

The Independent has an article today on Marina Guinness (yes, of those Irish Guinnesses). She has a house in County Kildare, which is the farm where Glen and Mar live. It's got a recording studio, and Marina has become this incredible patron of the arts - just letting musicians live there to make records or hang out. Most of what I think of as the Grafton St crowd (Glen, Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Rónán Ó Snodaigh, and the rest of Kíla) have either lived or recorded at the Guinness house. It's a lovely article, mostly focusing on Marina's connections with Kíla, but here is my favorite part:

With all this creative energy pulsing about the place, Marina took up the violin.

"But oh God, I was so bad that Marketa came down one morning, looking green in the face, telling me she had heard a ghost wail in the night. And I said: 'That was just me practising the fiddle!'"
